Disorders can occur when we are emotionally deprived for long periods of time with no hope of relief. The brain becomes incapable of love and connection with others, yet we still long for it. The threat detection portion of the brain malfunctions in social settings, causing undue stress and anxiety, and feelings of insecurity and defectiveness. We all deal with these feelings in different ways, creating many types of disorders. We grasp at self-help, yoga, meditation, medication, or anything else that can help us cope with the constant inner conflict between longing for connection and resisting connection.
